Frequently asked questions

1D or 2D scanner: which do I need?
A 1D scanner reads linear barcodes such as EAN-13 or Code 128. A 2D scanner reads those as well as QR and DataMatrix codes, including codes on phone screens. If you work with DataMatrix product marking codes, choose a 2D scanner.
Corded or wireless scanner?
A corded scanner suits a fixed checkout because it never needs charging. A wireless scanner works over Bluetooth or through a cradle and lets staff move freely around the warehouse, shop floor or bulky goods at receiving. Range depends on the model and is listed in the specifications.
Will the scanner work with my 1C?
Yes. Most scanners connect over USB in keyboard emulation mode, so they work with any program that accepts typed input. Poson engineers connect the scanner to 1C, set prefixes and suffixes and test it.
How rugged should a warehouse scanner be?
Look at the IP rating and the drop specification in metres. The higher the IP rating, the better the device is protected against dust and moisture. For dusty or cold areas, or where scanners get dropped often, we help you choose a rugged model.
Can a scanner read codes from a phone screen?
Scanners with a 2D imager read QR codes and barcodes from phone and tablet screens. Laser scanners cannot read from screens, because a screen does not reflect the laser beam the way paper does. If customers show you e-coupons or QR codes, choose a 2D model.
Handheld or presentation scanner for the checkout?
A presentation scanner sits on the counter and the cashier simply passes items in front of it, which speeds up busy checkouts. A handheld scanner is handier for large and heavy items. Many handheld scanners switch to automatic reading when placed in a stand, so you can combine both.
